Critical minerals are the building blocks for our transition to a low carbon economy. The Government of Canada sees critical minerals as “a generational opportunity for Canada in many areas: exploration, extraction, processing, downstream product manufacturing and recycling” and is committed to seizing this opportunity in a way that benefits every region across the country. Within the recently released Critical Minerals Strategy, the government has noted the need for better coordination during the impact assessment and regulatory/permitting processes. To avoid duplication, streamline requirements, and support an effective permitting process, early and effective consultation and engagement will be needed.
What constitutes “good” engagement by exploration and mining companies with rightsholders and communities of interest? What strategies, tactics and ideas enable “effective” consultation? How will success be measured?
